CORRECTIONS
A letter (12 May) wrongly stated that the union of the crowns of England and Scotland came after the reign of Charles II. In fact it was in 1603, well before the time of Charles II.
The lowest temperature ever recorded on Earth – at Vostok station – was -89.2C, not -89.6C (The island at the end of the world, 19 May).
