Authorities put poll on hold in defiance of court ruling
Elections in Punjab have been postponed in a move that spurns a supreme court ruling and is likely to cause more sparks between supporters of former prime minister Imran Khan and the government.
The Election Commission of Pakistan claimed it was “not possible to hold and organise the elections honestly, justly, fairly, in a peaceful manner”.
The move, in Pakistan’s most populated province, appears to violate a supreme court ruling this month that a new election be held within 90 days of the Punjab assembly being dissolved.
