Fertiliser from farming runoff has helped turn Lake Waikare a sickly hue and made it one of the country’s most polluted lakes, while taking a tremendous toll on fish and bird populations. The lake is part of the Waikato river system in the North Island and the region is considered the dairy powerhouse of New Zealand.
