Humanity is sitting at ‘90 seconds to midnight’

A panel of international scientists has warned that humanity’s continued existence is at greater risk than ever, largely as a result of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.

The Bulletin of the Atomic Scientists set its Doomsday Clock at 90 seconds to midnight, the closest to midnight it has been since it was established in 1947.

Rachel Bronson, the head of the bulletin, said the clock had been at 100 seconds to midnight, for three years. The clock hands are set each year by the bulletin’s science and security board with the support of its board of sponsors, which includes 10 Nobel laureates.
