A spectacular display of the northern lights is captured above Villingaholt church, on the south coast of Iceland. Also known as the aurora borealis, the lights are produced when charged particles are ejected by the sun and funnelled towards the Earth’s poles by the planet’s magnetic field. November through to February offer the darkest skies and longer evenings to capture the phenomenon, which occurs year-round but is not visible during northern summer months.
