Brands and banks urged to stop backing deforestation
Indigenous leaders from the Amazon implored major western brands and banks to stop supporting the destruction of the rainforest through mining, oil drilling and logging, warning that the ecosystem is on the brink of a disastrous collapse.
Representatives of Indigenous peoples from the Amazon region descended on New York last week to press governments and businesses to stem the flow of finance to polluting and deforesting activities.
A report by the Association of Brazil’s Indigenous Peoples alleges that major brands have products that may be tainted by gold illegally mined in Amazon Indigenous territories.
