We should hang on to our masks so we don't forget

I read (Guardian View, 7 January) with interest and agreement that the world must learn the lessons of the pandemic to be in a far better place to deal with the next one. The image on the front cover of a now obligatory world mask illustrated how this has been a common enemy that has outwitted us with its many variants.

There are realistic warnings from scientists that the next viral onslaught could be even worse. It is of course in our human nature that once the pandemic has passed, life will return to normal.

I beg to differ because this wily and devious enemy will regroup and attack again, and it will be our fault and that of our governments, if we are not match fit to defeat it. Yes, we must carry on but also be vigilant and keep a box of masks handy, just as a Covid aide-memoire that we did indeed have to wear them on a daily basis, however surreal that will seem in the future, and a timely reminder of how many men, women and children lost their lives to this ghastly virus.
