Aung San Suu Kyi charged with election fraud
The military junta has charged Aung San Suu Kyi with “election fraud and lawless actions”, according to state media, heaping more legal pressure on the ousted leader.
Military-controlled media reported that 16 people were being prosecuted in relation to alleged fraud during the 2020 general election. Aung San Suu Kyi’s party, National League for Democracy (NLD), won the vote by a landslide.
The military, which seized power on 1 February, refused to accept the result but has not presented evidence of rigging.
