Fuel for thought for those queuing up for petrol

There are at least three beauties of Brexit (Spotlight, 1 October). The first is that British people voted twice for Brexit and in the end “got Brexit done”. Democracy works – congratulations. The second beauty is that some have Brexit while others have petrol. And the third beauty of Brexit is that more than half of all British people waiting at a petrol station will have time to contemplate the beauty of Brexit and to become lorry drivers. • Watching the UK government tying themselves in knots is almost laughable. They are asking for the impossible. Leave the EU, leave the customs union, refuse the authority of the EU Court of Justice ... leave the club but rule the club. A pitiful situation but resolvable by a simple compromise ... a customs union. We need more humility, more flexibility and a government that understands its own weaknesses.
