Rooney’s Irishness is too important to miss out

Sally Rooney emphatically describes herself as an Irish novelist on the fly leaf of her new novel. The excellently serious article by Emma Brockes (The world has a way of intruding, 3 September) doesn’t examine the underlying Irishness of the work, however.

Ms Rooney is the clear voice of a distinct culture that has an enviably unique identity. The music, the history of storytelling, the legacy of its writers and dramatists and its language all seem to be respected and celebrated, even if indirectly. Conor excels at Gaelic football in Normal People – which is significant.
