The Guardian Weekly

Choice of recipes leaves a nasty taste in the mouth

I was so pleased the Guardian Weekly was one of the few publications keeping the climate catastrophe front and centre even in the pandemic. You even refer to it as “climate breakdown” or “climate catastrophe” instead of the benign sounding “climate change”. Most of the recipes of late have been vegetarian or vegan. Until the 3 September issue. And there it was: lamb chops with ezme, yoghurt and cumin salt.

You can’t have it both ways. Either you are serious about advocating for the climate or you carry on business as usual. The inconvenient truth is the consumption of meat and dairy is a big contributor to the climate breakdown we face. To quote George Monbiot (Opinion, 27 August): “The human tragedy is that there is no connection between what we know and what we do.” Sally J G Sutton Hawthorndene, South Australia
