The founder and leader of the Shining Path, the Maoist insurgents who terrorised Peru in the 1980s and 1990s. He was serving a life sentence and died on 11 September, aged 86.

New Zealand conceptual artist who exhibited alongside Andy Warhol and Roy Lichtenstein in pop art’s heyday. He died on 6 September, aged 86.

Michael Chapman

Esteemed guitarist whose playing influenced Elton John and David Bowie. He died on 10 September, aged 80.

María Mendiola

One half of the disco duo Baccara who found fame with the 1977 hit Yes Sir, I Can Boogie. She died on 11 September, aged 69.

Charlotte Johnson Wahl

British portrait painter and mother of prime minister Boris Johnson. She died on 13 September, aged 79.
