Spy agency helped CIA to destabilise Allende in Chile

Declassified government documents prove that in December 1970 Liberal foreign minister and later prime minister Billy McMahon approved a request from the Australian Secret Intelligence Service (Asis) to open a base in Santiago, Chile to assist the CIA’s destabilisation of Salvador Allende’s socialist government. Asis apparently conducted covert operations – including handling CIA-recruited Chilean assets in Santiago and filing intelligence reports to the CIA in the US.
