Entwined routes

Spain had long hosted three religions.

Jews appeared first, Roman legionaries brought Christianity and Islam arrived when north African invaders swept across the country in the eighth century. The tomb of King Ferdinand III of Castile is inscribed in Latin, Arabic, Spanish and Hebrew. Isabella of Castile and her husband Ferdinand of Aragon expelled “their” Jews in 1492 and forcibly converted Spanish Muslims to Christianity. Philip III then expelled 300,000 descendants of converted Muslims, the Moriscos, early in the 17th century.
