The GOP’s ‘court packing’ jibes are hypocritical
It’s a bit rich for Republicans to complain that a Democratic expansion of the number of members of the US supreme court would represent “court packing” (Spotlight, 28 May). Courts in general (as well as the supreme court) have been filled with rightwing justices. To suggest that the “last” attempt at court packing was by FDR in the 1930s ignores the achievement of the GOP during the Obama administration, when the Republican-controlled House and Senate prevented him appointing Merrick Garland to the supreme court; and the subsequent accelerated appointment and packing achieved under Trump.
