Police detain expected Ortega challenger
Police stormed into the house of prominent opposition leader Cristiana Chamorro the day after formally filing money laundering charges against her in what was seen as an attempt to stop a challenge to the autocratic leader Daniel Ortega.
Chamorro, 67, was detained at her home just before she was due to give a virtual news conference. The daughter of former president Violeta Barrios de Chamorro had been expected to run in presidential elections on 7 November. But prosecutors have asked the electoral tribunal to bar her from public office.
