Morrison’s climate speech was an embarrassment

Opinion

The article Road to net zero (30 April) does not mention Australia. It should. Australia was represented at President Joe Biden’s virtual climate summit by Prime Minister Scott Morrison, who told the summit that Australia was “on the pathway to net-zero” and “our goal is to get there as soon as we possibly can, through technology ... , not taxes ...” There was no net zero by 2050 emissions reduction target, just a repeat offering of his government’s shamefully inadequate 26-28%reduction on 2005 levels by 2030. Morrison’s “technology” included the hyper-expensive carbon capture and storage, a hoped-for hydrogenproduction industry, and still-experimental “green steel”. Mr Morrison’s address was a national embarrassment. Dr Douglas Mackenzie Canberra, ACT, Australia
